Synergistic Relationships Among Stress, Depression, and Troubled Relationships: Insights From Psychoneuroimmunology

Abstract: Stress and depression consistently elevate inflammation. Stress and depression are often experienced simultaneously, which is exemplified by people in troubled relationships. Troubled relationships also elevate inflammation, which may be partially explained by their ability to engender high levels of stress and depression. People who are stressed, depressed, or in troubled relationships are also at greater risk for health problems than their less distressed counterparts. Inflammation, a risk factor for a varie… Show more

“…39 This pathway may be one of the ways chronic stress is linked to poor health. [39][40][41][42] It is therefore possible that a psychological intervention might improve aspects of physical health, and if modification of such pathways had even a small effect then this could have profound public health significance. …”

“…Negative emotions can intensify a variety of health threats. Stress, anxiety and depression are related to impaired immune, pro-inflammatory cytokines and inflammation responses that have been linked to a spectrum of conditions associated with aging, including cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, frailty and functional decline, DM, certain cancers and periodontal diseases [24,34] . Additionally, negative emotions could contribute to prolonged infections and delayed wound healing, conditions that further enhance pro-inflammatory cytokine production [24] .…”

“…Accordingly, distress-related immune dysregulation may be the underlying mechanism of a larger and diverse set of health risks associated with negative emotions. Thus, the relationship between emotional disorders and inflammatory responses is likely to be synergistic and bidirectional-the vicious cycle effect [34] .…”

“…73 Les liens de comorbidité des pathologies inflammatoires générées par le stress sont, par ailleurs, soulignés dans la littérature (Pizzi, 2012 ;Jaremka, 2013 ;Rosenblat, 2014). Chaque pathologie contribue à l'entretien du processus inflammatoire et du stress oxydant, augmentant ainsi la probabilité de voir apparaître d'autres pathologies.…”
