“…Local recurrences are more common than distant metastases. In order to reduce the number of local recurrences, the use of induction chemotherapy can be justified in advanced ITAC bearing a functional p53 status . Despite multimodal more aggressive treatment of the primary tumor, these local recurrences are still responsible for the majority of deaths because these recurrences are frequently irresectable and re‐irradiation is not feasible anymore because the area of tumor recurrence has already been radiated as part of the treatment schedule of the primary tumor.…”

“…As mentioned below, ITAC is characterized by a high occurrence of molecular alterations reported to be associated with genotoxic agents, such as TP53 mutations . Licitra et al investigated the prediction of TP53 status in ITAC for primary cisplatin fluorouracil chemotherapy in the neoadjuvant setting.…”

“…For SNC, a favorable response to induction chemotherapy is often associated with improved survival and a reasonable chance of organ preservation [25,28,29,38]. This raises several questions.…”

“…tumor with wildtype TP53 or with a partially/fully functional TP53 mutation), present in 58% of the cases, was significantly related to the probability of obtaining a pCR. When these results were compared with patients treated only with craniofacial resection followed by radiotherapy in the same institute from 1996 to 2006, the advantage of performing neoadjuvant chemotherapy with PFL remained with the group of patients whose tumor retained a functional p53 protein [38]. Interestingly, p53 functional status was only a biomarker in the group of patients treated with PFL; not so in the group treated with resection alone.…”

“…In Europe, the most frequent histological subtype is the intestinal‐type adenocarcinoma (ITAC), whereas in most American studies squamous cell carcinoma is the most frequent histological subtype . One of the major etiologic factors of ITAC is exposure to wood dust . A possible explanation of the different rates of adenocarcinoma between North American and European series may be the more generalized use of dust aspiration devices and masks by American woodworkers.…”
