The impact of chemotherapy-induced side effects on medical care usage and cost in German hospital care — an observational analysis on non-small-cell lung cancer patients

Abstract: In first-line NSCLC treatment, in particular, CT toxicity management is expensive. Asymmetric cost distribution seems to be triggered by infection associated ICU care. Its avoidance should reduce patients' clinical burden and have considerable economic implications. Nevertheless, comparative observational studies have to confirm estimated savings.

“…[29303132] Several other researches indicate frequent hospitalization due to chemotherapy adverse effects. [333435] On the contrary, in the current study, although a majority of the study participants faced severe side effects for a week or more, a few hospitalizations were reported by them. The low number of hospitalization in the present study could be explained by the findings that the majority of the patients were educated by the HCWs about the management of chemotherapy side effects, before starting the actual therapy.…”

“…Due to unavailability and poor cost-effectiveness of cancer treatment strategies including surgery, chemotherapy, phototherapy, and radiotherapy, nowadays much attention has been paid to preventive strategies and the promising role of diet [9][10][11][12]. Furthermore, a plethora of adverse effects has been reported from chemotherapeutic drugs [13][14][15][16][17]. Several epidemiological studies indicated that high fish consumption is inversely correlated with incidence of certain types of cancer [18][19][20][21][22].…”
