IL-8 but not other biomarkers of endothelial damage is associated with disease activity in patients with ankylosing spondylitis without treatment with anti-TNF agents

Abstract: The objective of the study was to investigate the association between IL-8 and other biomarkers of endothelial dysfunction (MCP-1, V-CAM, I-CAM) and the disease activity scores in a sample of 54 patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) without use of biological agents. Fifty-four AS patients without treatment with anti-TNFs agents between 18 and 80 years old, who met modified New York criteria and at the same time the axial ASAS criteria, were evaluated using an epidemiological questionnaire that included amo… Show more

“…We also disclosed an association between sVCAM-1 and clinical features of the disease such as VAS spinal pain, hip involvement or synovitis and/or enthesitis in other peripheral joints. These results are in line with those reported by Azevedo et al [22] in AS patients with active disease but not receiving anti-TNF-α therapy. According to these observations, it seems that sVCAM-1 may be a good marker of disease activity and severity.…”

“…Previous reports described that sVCAM-1 is significantly associated with BMI [22,26]. Unexpectedly, in our study we disclosed an inverse association between sVCAM-1 and BMI.…”

“…In addition, local vascular damage may have been caused by oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation with disease activation, which leads to increased capillary permeability. It has been shown by Azevedo et al [42] that interleukin-8, one of the biomarkers of endothelial damage, was higher in AS patients and the levels were clearly correlated with disease activity. Except for damage, angiogenesis also plays an important role in periarthritis of hip.…”

“…Multiple endothelial biomarkers (also cellular biomarkers and microparticles) and various methodologies were proposed to predict the clinical outcome in sickle cell disease patients [47], ischaemic stroke [14], ankylosing spondylitis [48] and sepsis [38,39,49,50]. Since functional alterations of numerous endothelial biomarkers are causally involved in endothelial dysfunction-driven vascular pathologies, we aim to construct the panel of endothelial biomarkers encompassing multiple facets of endothelial-dependent regulation including those reflecting glycocalyx integrity, pro-and anti-thrombotic mechanisms, pro-and anti-fibrinolytic mechanisms, pro-and antiinflammatory mechanisms, vasoprotective mechanisms and others (see Fig.…”
