Cystic pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors: endoscopic ultrasound and fine-needle aspiration characteristics

Abstract: Analysis of EUS and FNA results showed that the cyst fluid from CPanNets had a lower CEA concentration, a higher frequency of thick walls on EUS, and higher diagnostic cytology compared with mucinous cysts. These findings may aid in the diagnosis of CPanNets.

“…Whilst the number of cases is too small to draw any definitive conclusions this improvement in diagnostic performance is possibly due to a combination of increased awareness among endosonographers and cytopathologists, and in addition, a reduction in unsatisfactory aspirates through the use of LBC for processing. The median CEA was low (1.4 ng/ml) which is in accordance with previous studies [26][27][28].…”

“…EUS-FNA sensitivity in this series was 71%. Another study by Yoon et al [27] reporting on 19 cases of cystic pNETs, documented a EUS-FNA yield of 63.2%. A further study by Morales-Oyarvide et al [15] reporting on 33 cases of cystic pNETs, documented a EUS-FNA yield of 71%.…”

“…44 A majority of cystic-NETs are indistinguishable from other PCLs on preoperative imaging and cyst-fluid CEA levels are generally very low; however, the yield of EUS-FNA cytology is high (73%) compared to other PCLs (20%). 44,45 Integration of Molecular Testing in the Management of Pancreatic Cysts…”

“…Tumor size, production of hormones, and cytological atypia do not correlate with biological behavior, so despite the malignant potential of tumors > 0.5 cm, these well-differentiated tumors are classified as neoplasms and not carcinomas histologically or cytologically.
