Characteristic features of ageing in Korean women’s hair and scalp

Abstract: These results show that intrinsic ageing produces diverse changes in the hair and scalp features of Korean women from their 40s, and the ageing features of Korean women's hair could be partially different from that of women in other countries.

“…There was 18% decrease between women in their 20s Our previous study showed that hair density decreased about 25% in Korean women in their 60s versus their 20s. In addition, the average hair diameter was the highest in their 20s in Korean and significantly decreased from the 50s to the 60s [6]. It implies that there are differences on hair-loss parameters with ageing between Asians.…”

“…It was correlated with the result of visual evaluation which showed increased gray hair and color fadedness with ageing (Table 2). Hair lightness and gray-hair ratio increased significantly from 50s in Korean [6]. However, as shown in Table 2, these factors tend to increase gradually with ageing in Chinese women.…”

“….with ethnics, age or fashion [1]. The cycles appear progressively altered with age in most subjects [6], where the anagen phase shortens, together with a thinning of still growing hairs. The latter may not be immediate, some follicles showing some delay in producing a new hair, a phenomenon called the 'hair eclipse' [2,3].…”

“…Breaking force was found to decline with age, however, the hair diameter also declines with age, such that the breaking stress (calculated as breaking force divided by the crosssectional area) remains constant [24], indicating that the effect is indeed GAN-related.…”
