Floods and droughts, two opposite natural components of streamflow regimes, are known to regulate population size and species diversity. Quantifiable measures of these disturbances and their subsequent ecological responses are needed to synthesize the knowledge on flow-ecosystem relationships. This study for the first time combines the systematic review approach used to collect evidence on the ecological responses to floods and droughts in Europe with the statistical methods used to quantify the extreme events severity. Out of 854 publications identified in literature search, 54 papers were retained after screening and eligibility checks, providing in total 82 case studies with unique extreme event-ecological response associations for which data were extracted. In this way, a database with metadata of case studies that can be explored with respect to various factors was constructed. This study pinpointed the research gaps where little evidence could be synthesized, for example, drought event studies and fish studies. It was demonstrated that in many cases the studied metrics (abundance, density, richness, and diversity) showed statistically significant decreases after or during the event occurrence. The responses in invertebrate density and richness were in general more negative than the corresponding responses in fish.Biota resistance to floods was found to be lower than the resistance to droughts. The severity of extreme events was not found to be an important factor influencing ecological metrics, although this analysis was often hampered by insufficient number of case studies. Conceivably, other factors could mask any existing relationships between disturbance severity and biotic response.

Ecological limits of hydrological alteration (ELOHA) framework aims to set limits of hydrologic alteration based on empirical hydroecological relationships built along flow impairment gradients. These relationships can be specific for different natural flow regime types. The object of our study is testing the ELOHA method in the Ebro River Basin. Seven flow alteration–ecological response curves were obtained in the present study as preliminary guidelines for developing and calibrating environmental flow standards in the Ebro River Basin. For continental Mediterranean‐pluvial flow regime mean monthly flow in March was related to Plecoptera abundance (ELOHAs ±21% from baseline), and high flow magnitude and frequency were closely related to Plecoptera, Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera richness (ELOHAs for high flow magnitude and frequency were +18 and +54% the reference central value respectively). For nivo‐pluvial flow regime, high flow magnitude was found indicative of macroinvertebrate biodiversity and Coleoptera abundance (ELOHAS −12 and +23% from central reference value respectively). And for pluvio‐oceanic flow regime, mean monthly flow in January was indicative of the proportion of Gastropoda, Oligochaeta and Diptera taxa (GOLD index) (ELOHA +17% from baseline). These hydrological limits are endorsed by recent international reference works. Flow alteration–ecological relationships presented here were constructed from real monthly flow data records and macroinvertebrate samples at family level. ELOHA values obtained in this study pretend to be a starting point for implementing an environmental flow regime program in the Ebro River Basin. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Straipsnyje pristatomas ir nagrinėjamas Rae Langton požiūris į kantiškąją „daikto paties savaime“ problemą. Autorė noumeno ir fenomeno perskyrą interpretuoja kaip dviejų „daikto paties savaime“ savybių rūšių perskyrą. Fenomenas – tai išoriškai noumeno atžvilgiu pasireiškiančios jo savybės. Išorinės savybės yra noumeno generuojamos jėgos. Noumenas turi ir vidines savybes, vidinę prigimtį, kuri nepasireiškia išoriškai ir todėl nėra prieinama pažinimui. „Vidinių savybių“ koncepcija kritikuojama teigiant, jog ji pernelyg išplečia Kanto apriorinių intelekto kategorijų taikymo sferą ir yra nesuderinama su noumeno, kaip nekonceptualizuoto ir nepriklausomo nuo juslinio receptyvumo daikto, galima reikšme Kanto filosofinėje teorijoje.Pagrindiniai žodžiai: Langton, Kantas, daiktas pats savaime, išorinės savybės, vidinės savybės.Rae Langton’s Interpretation of the Kantian Problem of the Thing-in-ItselfEdvardas Rimkus SummaryThe paper presents and examines Rae Langton’s approach to the Kantian problem of noumena. Langton treats the distinction between noumena and phenomena as a distinction between two kinds of properties of the thing-in-itself. Phenomena are externally manifested qualities of noumena. Appearance is the power generated by noumena. Noumena also have intristic properties or the inner nature, which are not externally manifest and thus are not accessibleto cognition. The paper criticizes such conception of intrinsic properties, since it extends the scope of application of Kant’s intellectual apriori categoriesand are not compatible with the possible significance of noumena as nonconceptual things independent of sensory receptivity.Key words: Langton, Kant, thing-in-itself, intrinsic property, extrinsic property.
