Aureivirga marina gen. nov., sp. nov., a marine bacterium isolated from the Mediterranean sponge Axinella verrucosa

Abstract: Two bacterial strains, VI.14 and VIII.04T, were isolated from the Mediterranean sponge Axinella verrucosa collected off the Israeli coast near Sdot Yam. The non-motile, aerobic, Gram-negative isolates were oxidase-negative and catalase-positive, and formed golden-brown colonies on marine agar 2216. The pigment was neither diffusible nor flexirubin-like. Strain VIII.04T grew at 15–37 °C, at pH 6.0–9.0, in the presence of 20–50 g NaCl l−1 and 20–80 g sea salts l−1, The spectrum was narrower for strain VI.14, wit… Show more

“…Four of these seven isolates have been chosen for a detailed analysis and were confirmed to belong to three new genera of the phylum Bacteroidetes (Haber et al . ,b,c). The comparatively low number (14) of different genera obtained from A. cannabina might be skewed due to the availability of only a single specimen from which isolates were cultured.…”

“…The type strains of L. vermicola and A. saemankumensis were isolated from a marine polychaete inhabiting a tidal flat of Donggum island and a tidal flat sediment of Saemangum, respectively, on the Yellow Sea in South Korea. The genera Lutimonas and Aestuariicola have been found to be phylogenetically closely related, the type strains of the type species showing 99.2 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (Park et al , 2009; Jung et al , 2012; Haber et al , 2013). The aim of the present work was to evaluate the taxonomic status of the genera Lutimonas and Aestuariicola as well as to determine the exact taxonomic position of strain RSS3-C1 T by using a polyphasic characterization.…”

“…One of the isolates, strain CE67 T , was selected for a later taxonomic experiment. Comparative 16s rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that the novel CE67 T strain was phylogenetically most closely related to members of the genera Aureivirga [3], Namhaeicola [4], Actibacter [5], and Lutimonas [6,7]. The genus Aureivirga in the phylum Bacteroidetes is a new member of the family Flavobacteriaceae, and was first reported by Haber et al in 2013 [3].…”
