2019 Town Hall on Human Factors and Ergonomics for Patient Work

Abstract: The 2019 Town Hall gathers stakeholders in the human factors and ergonomics (HFE) community who share an interest in applying HFE to study and improve patient work, an area called “patient ergonomics.” The objective of this town hall is to communally scope, prioritize, and develop applications of HFE for patient work. Whereas the 2018 Town Hall was primarily an initial community gathering, the 2019 Town Hall is envisioned as a space for further developing a community of practice in this area. “…Patient ergonomics is currently gaining traction in human factors. Translated to the "science of patient work," it is concerned with characterizing patient work with the objective of supporting the patient and other non-professionals in cognitive and behavioral performance in health-related activities (Holden et al, 2020;Holden & Valdez, 2019). Although some earlier discussions of patient work cited the treatment burden literature, the two literatures do not intersect despite their similar foci on patient activities and conceptualization of patient effort, as well as complementary objectives of support and reduction (Nathan-Roberts et al, 2015;Novak et al, 2015).…”

“…Several studies have been developed and published in scientific journals on Town Hall architecture and this is majorly due to its need to fulfil certain requirements associated with the natural environment (Widodo, 2019;Subroto, 2019) and political symbolic expression (Michael, Hadjichristos, Bougiatioti, & Oikonomou, 2010). In terms of the spatial layout, the design also needs to consider end-user aspects (Valand, 2011) including the ergonomic (Holden & Valdez, 2019), acoustic (Marshall & Hyde, 1982), natural lighting (Balocco & Frangioni, 2010), and space conditioning (Voll & Seinre, 2012).…”
