2015 RAD-AID Conference on International Radiology for Developing Countries: The Evolving Global Radiology Landscape

Abstract: Radiology in low- and middle-income (developing) countries continues to make progress. Research and international outreach projects presented at the 2015 annual RAD-AID conference emphasize important global themes, including (1) recent slowing of emerging market growth that threatens to constrain the advance of radiology, (2) increasing global noncommunicable diseases (such as cancer and cardiovascular disease) needing radiology for detection and management, (3) strategic prioritization for pediatric radiology… Show more

“…Therefore, RAD-AID and International Day of Radiology [65], an annual event supported by the European Society of Radiology, the American College of Radiology, and the Radiological Society of North America, have started to emphasize the importance of pediatric radiology [7]. Chest radiography is a valuable diagnostic tool in the pediatric population, and it is a key diagnostic tool in TB detection for pediatric patients in low-burden countries, due to the lower sensitivity of TB culture test (current gold standard for active TB detection) in pediatrics [66].…”

“…According to the 2015 RAD-AID Conference on International Radiology for Developing Countries report [ 7 ], approximately 3 to 4 billion people in the world do not have easy access to radiology services; among them, approximately 500 million to 1 billion are children. Therefore, RAD-AID and International Day of Radiology [ 65 ], an annual event supported by the European Society of Radiology, the American College of Radiology, and the Radiological Society of North America, have started to emphasize the importance of pediatric radiology [ 7 ].…”

“…Furthermore, the absence of a national or regional Canadian GHI group makes it difficult for interested, self-directed residents to find opportunities. RAD-AID International, an American-based international organization focused on improving radiology for poor and lowresource countries, has 46 chapters at Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Educationeaccredited academic centres [27]. To our knowledge, no Canadian RAD-AID chapters exist.…”
