2 W bismuth doped fiber lasers in the wavelength range 1300-1500 nm and variation of Bi-doped fiber parameters with core composition

Abstract: The Bi-doped fiber lasers operating at wavelengths of 1280 nm, 1330 nm, 1480 nm, and 1500 nm with a maximal output power of up to 2 W and a slope efficiency of 14 – 25% have been demonstrated for the first time. We have also investigated the influence of the doping concentration (GeO2 and P2O5) on the optical and laser generation properties of Bi-doped phosphogermanosilicate fibers.

“…Bismuth-doped silica glasses since the discovery of their near-IR (NIR) photoluminescence (PL) [1] attract much attention owing to the potential fiber laser applications [2][3][4]. Although the luminescent center (or centers) is not clearly identified up to now there exist some hypotheses and even numerical models that involve directly such a codopant as Al in the environment of Bi ions [5][6][7]. As a consequence we should recognize that not only the valence state of bismuth in a glass matrix should be the subject of investigation but also the role of other dopant.…”

“…As can be observed in Fig. 5b, the corresponding saturation output signal power does depend on the pump power and ranges from + (7)(8) to + (14-16) dBm with the BDFA design. It should be noted that the maximum output signal power (defined as an output power at the gain equal to zero) is greater than + 20 dBm (100 mW) for all the BDFA configurations.…”

“…A strong peak is observed at ∼1170 nm, close to the desired operation wavelength, in correspondence to the first transition of (7,6) SWNTs [34]. Another band at ∼1028 nm is also seen, assigned to (6,5) SWNTs [34]. …”
