Are urological cancer patients receiving care in accordance with good practice?

Abstract

Introduction: The NSW Urology Oncology Program is an initiative of the Cancer Institute NSW bringing together individuals and organisations with an interest in Urological Oncology. The multidisciplinary collaboration will implement the NSW Cancer Plan as it pertains to Urological Oncology. The aim is to utilise the members expertise to determine ‘good practice’ in Urological Oncology and develop practical guidelines and protocols to support service providers. In addition the program will pursue a planned approach to research, education and training. Method: Expressions of Interest were sought from clinicians, industry representatives, consumers and researchers with an interest in Urological Oncology. Through a series of working parties the members will address the priority issues arising from ‘Patterns of Care’ studies particularly the NSW Cancer Council study for Prostate Cancer. Specific projects are: • Tumour site specific Minimum Data Set • Guidelines and protocol development • Clinical Trials • Research • Education (multidisciplinary education) Outcomes: A planned and coordinated program underpinned by research, education and training, will progressively reduce mortality from Urological cancer and improve the quality of patient care. Conclusion: The NSW Urology Oncology Program will provide leadership to deliver a State‐wide planned approach to Urological Oncology in accord with ‘good practice’.
