In a failed effort to prepare the disubstituted Schiff-base phosphinoimine II (R=CH 3 ) the new ligand 1 was obtained instead (44 % isolated yield) by condensation of (2-CHO)C 6 H 4 PPh 2 and I [13,14] in absolute EtOH under reflux (Scheme 1).
