Various potentially toxic trace elements such as As, Cu, Pb and Zn have been remobilized by the weathering of a sulfide orebody that was only partially mined at Leona Heights, California. As a result, this body has both natural and anthropogenically modified weathering profiles only 500 m apart. The orebody is located in a heavily urbanized area in suburban Oakland, and directly affects water quality in at least one stream by producing acidic conditions and relatively high concentrations of dissolved elements (e.g., ~500 mg/L Cu, ~3700 mg/L Zn). Micrometric-scale mineralogical investigations were performed on the authigenic metal-bearing phases (less than 10 mm in size) using electron-probe micro-analysis (EPMA), micro-Raman, micro X-ray absorption spectroscopy (mXAS), scanning X-ray diffraction (mSXRD) and scanning X-ray fluorescence (mSXRF) mapping techniques. Those measurements were coupled with classical mineralogical laboratory techniques, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Authigenic metal-bearing phases identified are mainly sulfates (jarosite, epsomite, schwertmannite), Fe (oxy-)hydroxides (goethite, hematite and poorly crystalline Fe products) and poorly crystalline Mn (hydr-)oxides. Sulfates and Fe (oxy-)hydroxides are the two main secondary products at both sites, whereas Mn (hydr-) oxides were only observed in the samples from the non-mining site. In these samples, the various trace elements show different affinities for Fe or Mn compounds. Lead is preferentially associated with Mn (hydr-)oxides and As with Fe (oxy-)hydroxides or sulfates. Copper association with Mn and Fe phases is questionable, and the results obtained rather indicate that Cu is present as individual Cu-rich grains (Cu hydroxides). Some ochreous precipitates were found at both sites and correspond to a mixture of schwertmannite, goethite and jarosite containing some potentially toxic trace elements such as Cu, Pb and Zn. According to the trace element distribution and relative abundance of the unweathered sulfides, this orebody still represents a significant reservoir of potential contaminants for the watershed, especially in the non-mining site, as a much greater proportion of sulfides is left to react and because of the lower porosity in this site.

The provenance of Borneo's enigmatic alluvial diamonds: A case study from Cempaka, SE Kalimantan

Gem-quality diamonds have been found in several alluvial deposits across central and southern Borneo. Borneo has been a known source of diamonds for centuries, but the location of their primary igneous source remains enigmatic. Many geological models have been proposed to explain their distribution, including: the diamonds were derived from a local diatreme; they were brought to the surface through ophiolite obduction or exhumation of UHP metamorphic rocks; they were transported long distances southward via major Asian river systems; or, they were transported from the Australian continent before Borneo was rifted from its northwestern margin in the Late Jurassic. To assess these models, we conducted a study of the provenance of heavy minerals from Kalimantan's Cempaka alluvial diamond deposit. This involved collecting U-Pb isotopic data, fission track and trace element geochemistry of zircon as well as major element geochemical data of spinels and morphological descriptions of zircon and diamond. The results indicate that the Cempaka diamonds were likely derived from at least two sources, one which was relatively local and/or involved little reworking, and the other more distal which records several periods of reworking. The distal diamond source is interpreted to be diamond-bearing pipes that intruded the basement of a block that: (1) rifted from northwest Australia (East Java or SW Borneo) and the diamonds were recycled into its sedimentary cover, or: (2) were emplaced elsewhere (e.g. NW Australia) and transported to a block (e.g. East Java or SW Borneo). Both of these scenarios require the diamonds to be transported with the block when it rifted from NW Australia in the Late Jurassic. The local source could be diamondiferous diatremes associated with eroded Miocene high-K alkaline intrusions north of the Barito Basin, which would indicate that the lithosphere beneath SW Borneo is thick (~ 150 km or greater). The 'local' diamonds could also be associated with ophiolitic rocks that are exposed in the nearby Meratus Mountains. Generation and evolution of subduction-related batholiths from the central Urals: constraints on the P-T history of the Uralian orogen

Batholiths from the accreted terranes in the Urals were generated by repeated episodes of melting and intrusion. Verkhisetsk, the largest and one of the most complex subduction-related batholiths from the Urals, comprises an outer envelope of older tonalites, trondhjemites and granodiorites dated at 315-320 Ma and equilibrated at 6 kbar, intruded by an inner core of younger granodiorites, adamellites and granites dated at 275-290 Ma and equilibrated at 4 kbar. Older rocks have a high-A1 "VI'D/adakite chemistry, _320Ma/~r.~x ~ 2--5, and initial 87Sr/86Sr ~,~ 0.7043, with pronounced lateral ~chur ~I~U) zoning marked by the increase of LREE/HREE, Cr, Ni, and Mg eastwards. They were originated by melting of metabasalts in a subducted slab of young hot oceanic lithosphere with a temperature/depth trajectory that intersected the garnet-in univariant at ~1050°C and 13 kbar, thus causing the lateral zoning. We believe that such a 'warm' trajectory can be attributed to the oblique subduction of a young lithosphere. Younger rocks range from Na-rich metaluminous granodiorites to K-rich peraluminous two-mica granites with relict epidote crystals, and have almost the same isotopic signature as older rocks, from which they were generated by anatexis as a consequence of a melting event that occurred throughout the Urals at 275-290 Ma and produced most of the huge continental-type batholiths on the eastern side. This melting event is tentatively supposed to be the result of underplating by mafic magmas, which also caused the growth of the Urals crust from the Moho downwards until it reached the increased thickness revealed by seismological studies.
