1994 Report on Whin Sill Dolerite Ws‐e From England and Pitscurrie Microgabbro Pm‐s From Scotland: Assessment by One Hundred and Four International Laboratories

Abstract: This compilation report describes the field location, mineralogy, preparation and homogeneity testing of two new GIT‐IWG reference materials: Whin Sill dolerite (WS‐E) from England and Pitscurrie microgabbro (PM‐S) from Scotland. The elemental composition of these two new reference materials has been established by an international cooperative analysis programme involving participation by 104 laboratories. A full assessment of these analytical results is presented, from which working values have been derived f… Show more

“…Bulk chemical compositions of solid samples were obtained on crushed samples (<63 mm) at the analytical facility of SARM-CRPG (Vandoeuvre-lès-Nancy, France). Total contents of major elements were established by ICP-AES (Jobin-Yvon 70; Govindaraju & Melvelle 1987), and that of trace elements, by ICP-MS (Perkin Elmer 5000, Govindaraju et al 1994). Total organic carbon (TOC, with a previous HCl treatment to eliminate carbonates) and total sulfur (TS) were analyzed by O 2 flow combustion at 1400°C using a LECO SC 144 DR.…”

“…The primary calibration 281 standard was NIST-612 glass and secondary standards basaltic glass BCR-2G 282 (Govindaraju et al, 1994) and zircon 91500 (Wiedenbeck et al, 1995) were routinely 283 analysed as unknowns to check data quality. Batches of analyses of 8 "unknowns" 284 (unknown zircons and secondary standards 91500 and BCR-2G) were bracketed by 285 analyses of NIST-612 allowing monitoring of, and correction for instrumental drift.…”

“…of Granada using a Finnigan MAT 262 RPQ spectrometer after separation by ion-exchange resins using conventional methods. External precision (2tr) measured in ten replicates of the standard WS-E (Govindaraju et al, 1994) was about 4-0.003 rel.% for 87Sr]86Sr and ±0.0026 rel.% for 143Nd]144Nd. 87Rb/86Sr and 147Sm]144Nd analyses were done directly by ICP-MS, with an external precision (20) better than 4-1.2 rel.% and ±0.8 rel.%, respectively.…”
