“…Dauer (1961) has shown this to be true when he summarized a five-year period of state reports. He observed that more than half of the states had reported an average of less than one outbreak per year, and only six states reported an average of over two outbreaks.…”

“…In spite of these situations, some significance of the problem can be drawn from the reported cases and outbreaks, Dauer (1952) summarized in formation regarding only nine outbreaks of salmonellosis between the years 1938-1951 and subsequently reported (Dauer, 1953(Dauer, -1961 an average of 23 outbreaks (range 16-31) between 1952-1950. In a study of 926 outbreaks of gastroenteritis occurring between the years 1945, Feig (1950 reported 72 outbreaks in which Salmonellae were involved, MacCready et si.…”

“…The control of food poisoning and food borne infection throughout the world leaves much to be desired (Anon., 1959;Buchbinder, 1961;Newell, 1959;Seeliger, 1960). Even in those countries where intensive public health effort in the control of milk and water has made typhoid an infrequent disease, no comparable advance can be recognized in the control of salmonellosis caused by serotypes other than Salmonella typhosa (Dauer, 1961 ;Edwards, 1958). Indeed, salmonellosis seems to be increasing in a number of countries (Edwards, 1958;Kampelmacher, 1962 ;Kampelmacher, Guinee & Clarenburg, 1962 ;MacCready, Reardon & Saphra, 1957;Taylor, 1960a,b).…”

Food poisoning outbreaks due to Staphylococcus enterotoxin and to Clostridium perfringens remain common (Anon., 1962 ;Cockburn, 1960;Dauer, 1961 ;Seeliger, 1960). Deaths from botulism still occur (Dauer, 1961 ;Dolman, 1961 ;Thatcher, Robinson & Erdman, 1962).…”

“…Among the human enteroviruses, a number of types frequently cause clinical illnesses less distinctive than infectious hepatitis. There are large numbers of foodborne illnesses, with symptoms compatible with those of enterovirus infection, in which it has not been possible to demonstrate a bacterial etiologic agent (41). It is therefore likely that infectious hepatitis is not unique in its propensity for transmission in foods, but rather that the 22 foodborne outbreaks described may be indications of what can be expected if other outbreaks of foodborne illness are investigated with viruses in mind.…”
