18F-FDOPA PET Imaging in Prolactinoma

Abstract: Pituitary macroadenoma constitutes a frequently misdiagnosed benign tumor. We report herein a case where such macroadenoma, a prolactinoma, was incidentally discovered in a 63-year-old man who had been referred to F-FDG PET and F-FDOPA PET imaging for a pharmacoresistant epilepsy. An increased uptake was documented for both radiotracers within the sellar region, although with a much higher contrast for F-FDOPA than for F-FDG. This case presents an increased uptake documented within a prolactinoma owing to the … Show more

“…Few positive findings have been reported in a large series of NEN patients consisting of multiple myeloma, hepatocellular carcinoma, schwannoma and chondrosarcoma. 27 Intense tumor 18 F-FDOPA uptake has also been described in case reports of squamous cell carcinoma, 28 poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma, 29 thyroid neoplasms of follicular origin, 30 (Figure 4) prolactinoma, 31 and melanoma. 32 Melanoma case reports can be explained by the high AADC expression which is involved in melanin biosynthesis.…”

“…An interesting alternative approach to imaging D2Rexpressing lactotroph tumors has been identified through a small number of case reports using 18 F-DOPA as a ligand. Here, it is speculated that DOPA enters dopaminergic cells in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus and is converted and secreted into the cleft between dopamine-secreting neurons and lactotroph cells (42,43).…”

“…However, dopaminergic imaging has rarely been studied in prolactinomas. Only 11 C-N-methylspiperone, 11 Craclopride, 18 F-FDOPA and 18 F-fallypride as PET tracers have been used in prolactinomas [13][14][15]. Due to its convenience and stability, 18 F-fallypride has recently been successfully tested as a PET tracer to study prolactinomas [15].…”
