18 F-choline in experimental soft tissue infection assessed with autoradiography and high-resolution PET

Abstract: Abstract. For each oncological tracer it is important to know the uptake in non-tumorous lesions. The purpose of this study was to measure the accumulation of fluorine-18 choline (FCH), a promising agent for the evaluation of certain tumour types, in infectious tissue. Unilateral thigh muscle abscesses were induced in five rats by intramuscular injection of 0.1 ml of a bacterial suspension (Staphylococcus aureus, 1.2×10 9 CFU/ml). In all animals, FCH accumulation was measured with highresolution positron emiss… Show more

“…In addition to cancer imaging, choline-derived tracers have shown potential for inflammation imaging and accumulation in inflammatory cells (5,13). The metabolic activity and the production of nitric oxide may explain the choline uptake in macrophages (14), but this requires further study.…”

“…Phosphorylated by choline kinase, choline eventually incorporates into cell membranes. Increased choline transport and choline kinase activity in tumor cells and macrophages have been suggested to result in increased choline uptake in these cells (5,6).…”

“…16 Hence, high membrane turnover in proliferating and in active cells is closely associated with an increased choline metabolism. [17][18][19] Radiolabeledcholine tracers are already used in clinical PET imaging of different cancers 17 and are under evaluation for imaging of different inflammatory conditions. 18,19 We showed enhanced 18 F-FCH uptake in human carotid plaques early after onset of a cerebrovascular event compared with a low uptake in asymptomatic plaques.…”
