18.2: Distinguished Paper: Appropriate Luminance of LCD‐TV Screens under Actual Viewing Conditions at Home

Abstract: The preferred luminance level of LCD televisions under actual viewing conditions is important to obtain both good picture quality and low power consumption. We investigated actual viewing conditions of households and preferred luminance levels. As a result, we obtained equations which represent the preferred luminance level corresponding to different viewing conditions.

“…Thus, the two fitted curves have the similar shape with a shift along the vertical axis. Comparing with the published works such as [4,5], the experimental results of this study shows the similar tendency but different baseline due to the different experimental settings. As for the CCT of 6500K, the cases of dark room and ambient lighting show somewhat different rates of the decreasing trends.…”

“…For the multi-screen and cloud computing services, the viewing distance effects on image qualities need to be considered. Preferred luminance [2] as well as contrast according to the sensitivity of spatial frequency [3] also depends on viewing distance. The LED pitch of BLU (Backlight Unit), one of units that has a large impact on image qualities of LCD, is affected by the viewing distance with dimming.…”

“…Other human factors are gender, race, age, personality, eye sight and mood. Contrast sensitivity on spatial frequency and luminance is impacted by personal preference [2]. Contrast [5] and surround luminance [6] above a certain threshold has a lower sensitivity which should be considered in efficient power strategies.…”
