18.1: Invited Paper: High Efficacy PDP Design

Abstract: High efficacy plasma display panel characteristics are discussed. A high efficacy is obtained, especially for design and driving conditions that govern a fast discharge development. High Xe-content panels can be operated in addressed condition in this "high efficiency fast discharge mode" at sustain voltages 200 V. The influence of wall losses is discussed. The increasing loss of charged particles for increasing resolution, when the discharge is contained in a smaller volume, causes increasing discharge voltag… Show more

“…Recently, the resolution of display devices including PDP (Plasma Display Panel) is required to increase further as the high definition digital TV broadcasting and game contents are being introduced. But the decrease of the emissive area in PDP results in the decrease of luminous efficacy and increase of driving voltage [1]. A thorough understanding of the factors that affect the luminous efficacy and driving voltage of the discharge in the PDP cell is necessary, but it is not easily obtained by the experiment because the discharge in the PDP cell is too small to diagnose directly.…”

“…The dramatic growth of the plasma display panel (PDP) industry has been achieved by the realization of large and thin panels and high resolution, which is needed in digital broadcasting 1, 2. Recently, engineers and researchers engaged in the development of PDPs at universities and laboratories have been pursuing the exciting objective of large, high‐resolution panels, adopting single‐step methods that can produce several panels on large glass plates.…”
