under the auspices of The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. The meeting, which was highly successful, set new standards for the organisation of this important international conference, which had not been held in the UK since the 1980's. The organisers had been campaigning, against strong international competition, to have Edinburgh as the venue for well over a decade. In terms of atmosphere, international gravitas and, for most of the time, the weather the city and venue did not disappoint.
