179-LB: Characteristics of Children with Medication-Induced Diabetes (MID): A Canadian Pediatric Surveillance Program (CPSP) Study

Abstract: Objectives: There is limited data on MID in children. This study aimed to compare the demographic and clinical characteristics of 1) a historical MID cohort to a new cohort and 2) children with MID based on overweight/obese BMI (O-BMI) and normal weight BMI (N-BMI). Methods: National surveillance was conducted via the CPSP. Pediatric clinicians reported new cases (children <18 years old) of non-type 1 diabetes for 24-months (cohort 1: 2006-08, cohort 2: 2017-19). MID cases were classified… Show more

“…A Canadian Pediatric Surveillance Program (CPSP) Study found that if a pediatric patient’s parents have acanthosis nigricans or type 2 diabetes (T2D), blood glucose should be closely monitored when using diabetogenic medication. 43 Another prospective observational study found that approximately 17.7% of treated pediatric patients experienced at least one ADR, and the incidence of adverse reactions in children who had received general anesthesia was more than six times that of non-anesthetized children. 44 It is important to recognize that any neglected adverse reaction may result in long-term consequences that can affect the whole life of a pediatric patient.…”

“…115 Outside of Europe, programs such as the Canadian Paediatric Surveillance Program (CPSP) involve partnerships with government (Public Health Agency of Canada), professional societies (the Canadian Paediatric Society) and more than 1800 paediatricians and paediatric subspecialists. 116 The CPSP was established to evaluate rare exposures (fewer than 500 cases per year expected), address an important public health issue of scientific importance, and fill significant knowledge gaps for which surveillance is the most appropriate means. Surveillance studies provide vital insight into clinical uses for approved medicines which can lead to revised marketing authorisations that improve patient safety and encourage access to effective therapies.…”

“…In Canada, the number of children with obesity has more than doubled over the past 40 years [1], with the prevalence in children aged 2 to 17 years increasing from 6% between 1978 to 1979 to 12% in 2015 [2]. In parallel, the rates of lifelong chronic disease caused by childhood obesity have also increased; for example, a recent Canadian surveillance study reported a 68% increase in the minimum incidence of childhood-onset type 2 diabetes over a 10-year period [3]. Obesity in childhood tends to persist into adulthood, along with its associated physical and psychosocial consequences [4].…”
