-174G>C interleukin-6 gene polymorphism in Tunisian patients with coronary artery disease

Abstract: BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES:A state of low-grade inflammation accompanies the pathogenesis of atherosclerotic events. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a pleotropic pro-inflammatory cytokine that modulates the development of acute coronary syndromes (ACSs), partly by destabilizing coronary atherosclerotic plaques. We have examined the contribution of the -174G>C IL-6 promoter variant on the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) among Tunisians.PATIENTS AND METHODS:Study subjects included 418 CAD patients and 406 age- and … Show more

“…Their results demonstrated that a reduction in salt intake was accompanied by reduced production of the proinflammatory cytokines IL‐6 and IL‐23 . In addition, increased levels of inflammatory cytokines are reported in hypertension, and IL‐6 and TNF‐α are associated with BP variability and CAD . These studies demonstrate that IL‐6 is associated with high‐salt diets, hypertension, and CAD, but these associations were not reflected by the Na‐K ratio and the effects of a long‐term high‐salt diet on inflammatory factors in the population with prehypertension.…”

“…IL-6 is a pleiotropic cytokine that plays a pivotal role in host defense, immune response regulation, hematopoiesis, and inflammation [32]. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the IL-6 gene have been identified and associated with several diseases [33,34]. However, there are relatively few studies on IL-6 gene polymorphism in acne patients.…”
