17169 Numaralı Evkaf Defterine Göre Siirt Vakıfları (1860-1861)

Abstract

Waqfs, with values of contribution, solidarity and benevolence are of primary importance, constituted the most important social, cultural and economic issues life in Ottoman State like in Islamic States. In Ottoman State, the need for many institutions such as mosque, masjid, madrasah, caravanserai, bath, dervish lodge and hospital was met by waqfs. The incomes obtained from the waqfs led these institutions to maintain their presence for a long time. Siirt sanjak was rich in waqfs. There were waqfs of sanctuaries particularly like mosque and masjid in Siirt sanjak. Of all sources providing information about waqfs in Siirt sanjak, the waqf books available in Ottoman archives, are primary sources. These books give detailed information about incomes and expenditures of waqfs. The waqfs’ staff and their salaries are recorded in the books. The resource of this study is 17169 numbered waqf book. In the book, Husrev Pasha Waqf of Van sanjak is also given place apart from 31 waqfs in Siirt central district. In this study, prepared in the light of data in the waqf book, information about incomes, expenditures, properties and staff of Siirt central district waqfs between 1860-1861 is presented.
