17.2: Invited Paper: Influence of Blue Light from Smartphone on Visual Fatigue

Abstract: This study compared the visual fatigue caused by two smartphone displays with different blue light distributions based on a 90‐min video watching task. The results showed that the visual fatigue decreased when using low‐blue light display, reflected by subjective questionnaires, ocular results and electroencephalograph signals. The display with low blue light is recommended for reducing visual fatigue.

“…Blue light might also contribute to visual fatigue, but it remains unclear how significant this factor is since little research has been conducted, especially with HMDs (Heo et al 2017;Lawrenson et al 2017;Priya and Subramaniyam 2020;Tu et al 2021). Continuous (chronic) exposure to blue light might damage the retina (Ahmed et al 2018).…”

“…The QDCC simulation is performed in the optical software of LightTools, and the u values corresponding to high LCE and high OD are obtained according to Equation (2). This can be used to determine the two key parameters about QD concentration and color conversion layer thickness of the red and green sub-pixels.…”

“…Green and healthy display technologies are therefore highly demanded. Currently, the visual damage on the human eye is mainly attributed by the high‐energy and short‐wave blue spectrum of the three primary colors in mainstream display devices 1,2 . However, simply cutting or reducing the blue light part is not an appropriate approach, because it easily causes serious color deviation or display distortion.…”

“…With a high and very high level of physiological labor intensity, the annual increase in the risk of CFS increases by 2 and 4 times [3]. Programs for improving working conditions should include a section on minimizing the risks of a permanent lack of rest among workers, including regulation of the physiological intensity of work and options for "time protection" from harmful environmental factors [6].…”
