16.7%-efficiency ternary blended organic photovoltaic cells with PCBM as the acceptor additive to increase the open-circuit voltage and phase purity

Abstract: Ternary solar cells with an efficiency of 16.7% were enabled through the use of PCBM as a higher LUMO-level acceptor additive to concurrently increase Voc, Jsc and FF values.

“…In Figure 2b, we also represent the HOMO/LUMO levels of PffBT4T-2OD as taken from the literature [13]. We note that our experimentally determined HOMO/LUMO levels for the standard fullerenes PC 61 BM and PC 71 BM are in very good agreement with literature data [38,39] which guarantees the reliability of our measurements for all the remaining fullerenes. We note that some of the novel fullerenes (60a, 60b, 60c, and 70c) have slightly higher LUMO levels than the standards PC 71 BM and PC 61 BM, which in theory should favour higher V OC and PCE assuming that all other factors remain unchanged.…”

“…Also represented in Figure 2b are the HOMO/LUMO levels of the polymer, from the literature [10]. The HOMO/LUMO levels that we have determined for PC 61 BM and PC 71 BM are in excellent agreement with literature [56,57] which attests the reliability of our measurements for the fulleropyrrolidine acceptors. The fulleropyrrolidines 60A, 60B, 70A, and 70B have slightly higher LUMO levels than the PC 71 BM standard which should favor higher V OC and PCE values assuming that all other factors remain unchanged.…”

“…The OPVs based on polymer donor PM6 and acceptor Y6 exhibited an outstanding PCE of 15.7%. And state‐of‐the‐art PCEs of over 16% have been achieved with single‐junction solar cells based on Y6 and its derivatives . Besides, semitransparent polymer solar cells based on PM6:Y6 with PCE of over 12% and AVT of over 18% have also been demonstrated .…”
