1553 Early Ihdomethacin (Ind) Does Not Prevent Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (Bpd) in a Randomized Clinical Trial

Abstract

u s t o determine t h e content of AVP i n donor blood. I n keeping w i t h s t a n d a r d blood banking p r a c t i c e s , 80 ml of blood were drawn from each of e i g h t donors, mixed w i t h 7 ml of a n t i c o a g u l a n t (CPD) i n standard blood bank bags and r e f r i g e r a t e d a t 4OC. Daily samples were drawn on each of f i v e s u c c e s s i v e days. The plasma was a c i d i f i e d and f r o z e n a t -20°C u n t i l t h e time of a s s a y . AVP was e x t r a c t e d by b e n t o n i t e procedure modified from Skowsky technique i n d u p l i c a t e and measured by radioimmunoassay i n t r i p l i c a t e . Only 2 of 8 donors had h i g h e r than normal v a l u e s (6 & 7 pg AVP/ml) a t t h e time of t h e i n i t i a l sample. AVP l e v e l s decreased from day 1 t o day 5 w i t h t h e g r e a t e s t f a l l i n t h e f i r s t 24 hours. Fifteen AGA infants, gestation 1 3 2 wks., bt.wt. <I500 gms. were enrolled in t h e study. In 8 infants whose serum Ca declined <6.0 mg/dl, changes in serum Ca,Mg,P,PTH,CT and blood iCa were evaluated a t 8 +4 hrs.(baseline), when serum Ca declined t o < 6.0 mg/dl (pre-Ca), immediately post-infusion of 18 mg/kg of ~a + + a s Ca luconate (post-Ca). During t h e y e a r 1983, NM d a t a were c o l l e c t e d p r o s p e c t i v e l y on a l l l i v e b o r n i n f a n t s w i t h a GA of <32 weeks(wks) and/or a B W of <1500 g r , admitted t o 102 n e o n a t a l wards(leve1 1 , 2 and 3 hospit a l s ) i n t h e Netherlands. The 1208 i n f a n t s , admitted t o t h e s t u d y (133 i n f a n t s excluded because of l e t h a l c o n g e n i t a l malformations o r u n c e r t a i n GA) r e p r e s e n t 94% of t h e t o t a l l i v e b o r n p o p u l a t i o n of t h i s c a t e g o r y i n t h e Netherlands.
