150 GB, 6-Layer Write Once Disc for Blu-ray Disc System

Abstract: Ahstrart: This report is on a 150 GB &layer write once disc with the newly developed recording materials for Blu-ray Disc system. We achieved the optimum recording powers and the jitter values less than 16.0 mW and 8.0 % for each layer at the user data recording rate of 72 Mhps. This result shows feasibility of realization of 6layered recordable Blu-ray disc.

“…Currently, write-once discs with up to six layers (200 Gbytes) and read-only memory (ROM) discs up to twenty-layers (500 Gbytes) have been demonstrated [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. However, multilayer recording suffers from a serious decrease in signal level, which causes an insufficient signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).…”

“…15 Figure 8 illustrates its cross-sectional diagram. Different spacers (t 10 to t 54 ) were formed with UV-curable resin, spin-coated on a 1.1 mm thick substrate in order to avoid signal deteriorations owing to internal multiple reflections.…”

“…As described in Ref. 15, inorganic high-transmissive recording materials were sputtered on the groove-structured spacers, and the reflectivity of each information layer was designed for the signals to be equal after a round trip of the illuminating beams. A 38 µm thick resin cover and a 2 µm thick hard-coat layer were also spin-coated on top of recording stacks.…”
