“…Two groups of the major representative constituents were been isolated from Danshen, which are hydrophilic phenolic acids and lipophilic diterpene quinones, containing danshensu (DSS), protocatechuic aldehyde (PAL), rosmarinic acid (RA), lithospermic acid, salvianolic acid B (SAB), dihydrotanshinone I (DI), cryptotanshinone (CT), tanshinone I (TI), and tanshinone IIA (IIA). Modern pharmacological studies have indicated that these chemicals have various biological activities, such as anti-myocardial ischemia [ 5 ], anti-cerebral ischemia [ 6 , 7 ], anti-atherosclerosis [ 8 ], anti-tumor [ 9 , 10 , 11 ], anti-thrombosis [ 12 ], anti-hepatocyte injury [ 13 , 14 ], renal protecting [ 15 ], anti-inflammatory [ 16 , 17 , 18 ], etc. The synergistic action of these various components is considered to be responsible for the therapeutic effects of Danshen.…”

“…Both RS and DS ethanolic extracts exhibited pharmacological effects on the "Spleen" ex vivo irrespective of their difference in chemical composition. Active P. K. Leong et al DOI: 10.4236/cm.2019.104007components of DS, such as salvianolic acids, tanshinones and dihydrotanshinone, have been shown to produce immunomodulatory actions[17] [18] [19], which may be related to an enhancement of "Spleen" function. Given that no common chemical constituents have been identified in RS and DS[20] [21], the active component(s) in DS responsible for eliciting the organ-specific response is yet to be determined.…”

“…Salvia miltiorrhiza is a perennial herb which is well known to have tanshinones as principal bioactives. This plant is widely employed as traditional remedy, particularly in TCM (Li et al, 2015). Over the past decade, researchers have conducted studies to investigate its anti-allergic effect.…”

“…Additionally, the ethanolic extract of S. miltiorrhiza also inhibited other chemical mediators, such as leukotriene C 4 with a IC 50 value of 2.6 µg/ml, COX-1 and COX-2-dependent prostaglandin D 4 with IC 50 values of 3.96 and 21.54 µg/ml respectively (Yang et al, 2008). With the aid of findings from Yang et al (2008), Li et al (2015) successfully identified 15,16-dihydrotanshinone-I (7) as the compound responsible for the inhibition of intracellular calcium level, hence suppressing the downstream release of leukotriene C 4 and prostaglandin D 4 from activated bone marrow-derived mast cells (BMMC). The inhibition percentage achieved was as high as 90% with a dose of 20 µM of 15,16-dihydrotanshinone-I (7) (Li et al, 2015).…”
