125 Years Eduard Zintl

Thomas F. Fässler

Abstract: While in molecular chemistry the concept of valency, the electron-dot formulae (Lewis structures) and the noble-gas rule for atoms were established in the early 1900s and made it possible to describe localized chemical bonds between atoms using simple counting rules, a similar concept for non-ionic compounds was lacking in solid-state chemistry.
