Comparison of Excitation Functions of Longer and Shorter Lived Radionuclides

Nuclear reactions, which are very important from the point of view of human health, may occur during the production of the radiation sources, used in radiotherapy. The nuclear reaction data are needed in the radioisotope production procedure. The total cross section is also important in accelerator technology, in view of radiation protection and safety. In general, the significance of the cross section data for nuclear reactions in radionuclide production programs is firmly established. Gamma irradiation tracers can offer a large amount of information about the anatomy of different organs in the human body. The main purpose of this work was to compare the cross section of longer-shorter lived radionuclides. Theoretical excitation functions have been calculated with TALYS 1.6 nuclear reaction simulation code. The calculated results have been discussed and compared with the experimental data.

Breast I-131 Uptake in a Postpartum Woman with Thyroid Cancer: A Case Report

Background: I-131 uptake in the breast could be occasionally observed in differentiated thyroid cancer who received I-131 scintigraphy or therapy. Herein, we report a postpartum patient with papillary thyroid cancer with breast uptake who received I-131 therapy. Case report: A 33-year-old postpartum woman with thyroid cancer received 120mCi(4440MBq) I-131 therapy 5 weeks after she ceased to breastfeed. The second day after ingestion of I-131, whole-body scintigraphy demonstrated asymmetric and marked uptake in bilateral breasts. The radiation dose of I-131 in the lactating breast would decrease rapidly by reducing the activity of breasts and expressing breast milk with an electric pump once daily. Results: The sixth day after administration, scintigraphy demonstrated weak uptake in bilateral breasts. Conclusion: Physiologic I-131 uptake in the breast could occur in a postpartum woman with thyroid cancer who received I-131 therapy. In this patient, we find that the radiation dose of I-131 accumulated in the lactating breast would decrease rapidly through reducing the activity of breasts and expressing breast milk with an electric pump, which may be a better choice for the postpartum patient who was not given lactation-inhibiting medications and had I-131 therapy.

The main purpose of this study was to investigate dose rate emanating from patients treated with 131I to evaluate which of the theoretical formulas, inverse-square law (ISL) and International Atomic Energy Agency-International Commission on Radiological Protection (IAEA-ICRP) suggested equation, can provide a sufficiently close approximation of the measured dose rate. Measurements were performed based on the IAEA safety report No. 63 method at 0, 12, 24, and 48 h after administration of radioiodine at a distance of 1 m for 69 patients and for the rest of 67 patients, dose rate was measured at 2, 4, 24, and 48 h at a distance of 2 m. Results revealed that the ISL formula gained better approximation of measured dose rates than the IAEA-ICRP equation with the lesser error. The ISL formula is still more reliable than the novel method of dose calculation in the vicinity of patients. This finding reminded us the prime importance of distance as a radiation protection principle.
