11β‑hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases as targets in the treatment of steroid‑associated femoral head necrosis using antler extract

Abstract: Abstract. The aim of the present study was to investigate the therapeutic effect of deer antler extract on avascular necrosis of the femoral head (ANFH) induced by steroids, and to confirm that 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases (11β-HSD) are one of the targets of treatment with antler extract. A total of 30 rabbits were randomly divided into 5 groups (n=6): A control, ANFH, ANFH + antler (250 mg/kg), ANFH + antler (500 mg/kg) and ANFH + antler (1,000 mg/kg) group. Rabbits in the experimental groups were inject… Show more

“… 96 Pilose antler extract can regulate the expression of 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11 β-HSD) in rabbits’ femoral heads and osteoblasts, and promote the proliferation of osteoblasts. 97 Camporesi et al conducted a 7-year follow-up of patients with SANFH. The results showed that hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatment for 6 weeks significantly improved the clinical symptoms in SANFH patients.…”

“…The sika deer antler preparation has been used to strengthen bones and muscles, promote blood flow, reduce chronic joint pain, lower cholesterol levels, increase immune function, and have a positive impact on antioxidant capacity. Studies have shown that sika deer antler may have preventive and therapeutic effects on femoral head necrosis, and may also help to produce sperm and strengthen bones (Pu & Peng, 2018; Wang et al, 2020). Pilose antlers may be used as a source of calcium to treat bone degeneration and strengthen bone (Chen et al, 2019; Chu et al, 2021).…”
