1109. Boron hydride derivatives. Part IX. The reaction of decaborane with ammonia

Abstract: Ammonia reacts with decaborane in benzene solution to give a triammoniate identical with that formed as a major product from decaborane and ammonia gas. The structure of this compound and of the substance formed from it by the action of heat have been examined. The latter is shown to be diammoniadecaborsne, B1,Hl,(NH,),, whilst the triammoniate is best formulated as NH,+[B1,H1,.NH,,NH,]-.BioHi4,3NH, BioHisNa (1) + NH, f Ha Further confirmation is obtained from the infrared (i.r.) spectrum, Fig. 2. l Part VIII,

“…The four absorption bands are seen in the spectrum of the film deposited at 300~ These correspond to NH stretching (3200 cm-') (19,20), BH stretching (2500 cm-') (20), and antisymmetric and symmetric NH3 deformation mode (1550 cm -1, 1405 cm-') (19). Above 500~ the absorption due to the BN lattice vibration appears at 1380 and 800 cm-' (21), and that due to the BH and NH stretching vibration disappears. Figure 5 shows the infrared transmission and reflection spectra of the film deposited at 1000~…”

“…The reactions of the 6,9-bis(acetonitrilium) derivative with tertiary amines in refluxing benzene or toluene lead to the corresponding 6,9-bis(trialkylammonium) derivatives [arachno-6,9-(R 3 N) 2 -B 10 H 12 ] (R = Me, Et) [214,245]. The 6,9-bis(ammonium) derivative [arachno-6,9-(H 3 N) 2 -B 10 H 12 ] was prepared by the reaction of decaborane( 14) with ammonia in benzene or toluene [259,260]. The solid state structures of [6,9-(H 3 N) 2 -B 10 H 12 ] (Figure 16) [243,261] were studied by X-ray photoelectron and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy [225,226,264].…”

“…The reaction of the 6,9-bis(acetonitrilium) derivative with methanol results in the formation of the corresponding imidate [arachno-6,9-(MeO(Me)C=HN)2-B10H12] [248].Nowadays, the addition of nucleophiles to the activated triple -С≡N-bond of nitrilium derivatives of various polyhedral boron hydrides has become a widely used method for their modification[249][250][251][252][253][254][255][256][257][258].The reactions of the 6,9-bis(acetonitrilium) derivative with tertiary amines in refluxing benzene or toluene lead to the corresponding 6,9-bis(trialkylammonium) derivatives [arachno-6,9-(R3N)2-B10H12] (R = Me, Et)[214,245].
