11. The Indo-Malaysian North-Australian phycogeographical region revised

Abstract: The present knowledge of the freshwater algal flora in the Indo-Malaysian North Australian region is reviewed. More than 4700 taxa have been recorded from this region. Desmids, diatoms and cyanobacteria are among the better studied groups of organisms, while phytoflagellates have received very little attention. Phytoplankton communities in tropical lakes are generally similar to summer communities of temperate lakes. In addition, there is a large number of typical tropical taxa, including pantropical and regio… Show more

“…Vietnam belongs to the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot, 1 of the 35 areas on the Earth that have exceptionally high concentrations of endemic species and the greatest risk of their disappearance because of heavy human impacts [64]. Unfortunately, the algal diversity of Indo-Burma is still poorly understood, and so even the approximate number of species and the level of endemism are both underestimated [65]. Altogether with the previous findings [39][40][41][42][43], there are now fifty-seven Mallomonas taxa and five Synura taxa reported in Vietnam.…”

“…It is estimated that there are about 13,500 vascular plant species in the Indo-Burma hotspot, of which about 52% are endemic [6]. Unfortunately, the algal diversity of Indo-Burma is still poorly known [7].…”

“…However, results from recent integra-tive studies indicate that tardigrade species may not be as widely distributed as previously thought [117][118][119][120][121][122][123]. This idea is supported by distribution patterns reported in other metazoans [124][125][126][127][128][129].…”
