(2012): The dependence of meteoric 10Be concentrations on particle size in Amazon River bed sediment and the extraction of reactive 10Be/9Be ratios. AbstractConcentrations of meteoric 10 Be extracted from detrital Amazon river sediment are strongly particle size-dependent. Such grain size dependency presents a formidable obstacle to routine applications of meteoric cosmogenic 10 Be to basin-wide erosion studies. In this study, we explore means to eliminate these grain size effects in bedload from rivers of the Amazon basin by measuring 10 Be/ 9 Be ratios after selective chemical extraction of reactive authigenic phases. These phases mainly comprise FeMn(hydr)oxides that are the main carriers of 9 Be and 10 Be. We explore the distribution of 10 Be and its stable 9 Be counterpart between these phases and the partitioning of Be into remaining silicate fractions.This extraction procedure was carried out on bedload samples comprising the three main tectonic units of the Amazon basin, namely the Andes, the Guyana and Brazilian Shields, and the central Amazonian lowlands. For all samples, extracted 10 Be concentrations show a strong decrease with increasing particle size, with up to 20 times more 10 Be extracted from the finest analyzed (<30 μm) grain size when compared to the coarsest (90-125 μm) grain size. We attribute this decrease in 10 Be concentrations mostly to subsequent dilution by quartz in coarse bedload. However, when normalized to stable 9 Be concentrations that are also extracted from reactive phases, grain size effects are effectively removed

Vingt-six nouveaux sites d'altérites, souvent appelées saprolites, ont été découverts sous les dépôts meubles des hauts plateaux de la Gaspésie. Ces altérites, qui appartiennent à une ancienne surface de météorisation tronquée, ont une composition minéralogique et géochimique distinctes à la fois de la roche en place et des dépôts sus-jacents. L'âge de ces altérites est probablement tertiaire. La préservation préférentielle des altérites sur les versants NNO et SSE des montagnes, c'est-à-dire en amont et en aval par rapport à l'écoulement glaciaire régional, est interprétée comme un nouvel indicateur de glaciation continentale en Gaspésie. Trois autres surfaces de météorisation stratigraphiquement plus jeunes ont été reconnues dans les dépôts sus-jacents. Ces surfaces sont: 1) la surface actuelle, 2) une surface interstadiaire et 3) une surface interglaciaire. L'âge relatif de ces surfaces de météorisation a été estimé par comparaison des caractères morphologiques, minéralogiques, géochimiques et stratigraphiques des matériaux qui leurs sont associés. 1) Les colluvions de surface, qui représentent la plus jeune surface de météorisation, n'ont été exposées qu'aux processus de météorisation postglaciaire; leurs fractions argileuses montrent un lessivage en Mn, Co1 Cu, Pb, Zn, As et U, et un enrichissement en Cr et Fe par rapport aux sédiments glaciaires sous-jacents. 2) Les dépôts de pente intertill présentent la période de météorisation précédente; ces dépôts sont formés de géli-fracts qui ne montrent aucun indice d'altération géochimique. Ils se sont formés sous un climat périglaciaire, durant un interstadiaire. 3) Les colluvions oxydées en position stratigraphique infratill représentent une troisième période de météorisation; leur degré d'altération se compare à celui des colluvions de surface exposées aux conditions climatiques actuelles et leur âge serait donc interglaciaire.Twenty-six deeply weathered bedrock occurrences, formally described as saprolites, were discovered underlying the unconsolidated sediments in the plateaux regions of Gaspésie. These occurrences, which are erosional remnants of an old weathering surface, are preferentially preserved on slopes oriented to NNW and SSE. The weathered bed rock is distinct both mineralogically and geochemically from the solid bed rock and from the overlying deposits. The age of weathering is probably Tertiary. The preservation of these occurrences on slopes oriented in upglacial and downglacial directions is a new evidence for the invasion of Gaspésie by the continental Ice Sheet. Three younger weathering surfaces were identified in the sediments overlying the weathered bed rock. They are the present-day surface, an interstadial surface and an interglacial surface. The relative age of these surfaces is based on a comparison of the morphological, mineralogical, geochemical and stratigraphie attributes of the corresponding underlying sediments. 1) The surficial colluvium which underlies the postglacial weathering surface has been partially leached of Mn, Co, Ni1 C...
