“…In 10 patients who underwent primary surgery and postoperative radiation therapy, Harrison et al 29 found some mean performance status scores of 50% (for those with T1 or T2 tumors) and 32% (for those with T3 or T4 tumors) for normalcy of diet and 65% (for those with T1 or T2 tumors) and 35% (for those with T3 or T4 tumors) for understandability of speech. For the same treatment modality, Nisi et al 30 obtained scores of 56% for normalcy of diet and 84% for understandability of speech; however, for a group of patients who underwent surgery alone, mainly partial glossectomy, they found scores of 91% and 96%, respectively. 15,30 For patients who underwent total glossectomy, Ruhl et al 27 reported mean performance status scores of 28.6% for normalcy of diet and 46.4% for understandability of speech.…”

“…Clinical trials 25,[27][28][29] have shown improvements in scores with time from treatment, which is an indicator of responsiveness. A survey of 47 of 61 disease-free survivors of chemoradiotherapy 26 showed a moderate Spearman correlation between FACT-H&N and number of "troublesome" symptoms reported, but did not show any significant differences with time since treatment vs. 23 months.…”
