100 Gbit/s PAM4 signal transmission and reception for 2-km interconnect with adaptive notch filter for narrowband interference

Abstract: In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate the transmission of 56 Gbaud four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) signal over 2-km single mode fiber (SMF) with intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) scheme, while the bit-error-ratio (BER) of the PAM4 signal is under hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8 × 10. Linear pre-equalization is implemented in the transmitter side with a 3-tap finite-impulse-response (FIR) filter to compensate for the intersymbol interference (… Show more

“…Therefore, the BER performance is degraded obviously at high ROPs when ISPR is larger than −4 dB. Also, we compare the results with ANF-based CTLC proposed in [15] to that of the proposed TDA-CTLC in this work. In our experiment, the adaptation step size and amplitude of the reference signal for the ANF-CTLC are 1e-4 and 0.8, respectively.…”

“…As a result, the total number of symbols in one frame is 1,203,072. Afterward, the frame signal is up-sampled by a factor of 3 and shaped by a square root raised cosine (SRRC) filter [15], [24], [25] with a roll-off factor of 0.1. The filter order of the SRRC is 1024 in this work.…”

“…A delay time difference occurs among these two orthogonally polarized modes, due to small perturbation inside the optical fiber. The impairments generated by this phenomenon are called PMD [26]. The impairments caused by the dispersion are more severe in the case of multi carrier OCN and, hence, affect the overall optical system efficiency.…”

“…To transmit high-capacity signal on limited bandwidth, multi-level modulations have been widely investigated in research and commercial fields. 4-level pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM4) has been standardized by IEEE P802.3bs 400-Gb/s Ethernet Task Force for short-reach optical interconnects [4][5][6]. 4×100-Gbit/s optical PAM4 system is a favored option to achieve 400-Gbit/s interface for short-reach optical interconnects.…”
