Purpose This study aims to understand to what extent family firms engage in and understand the importance of cooperation whilst analysing the underlying barriers that may restrain cooperative engagement. Design/methodology/approach Considering the purpose of this study, a qualitative exploratory approach is adopted, using a multiple case study methodology, consisting of four cases. Thus, interviews were chosen as the source of data collection, as this allows proximity and involvement with those with power to engage in cooperation. Findings The results highlight that family business particularities seem to have an aggravating effect on the general barriers to cooperative engagement. Managerial characteristics such as risk aversion, concern about independence and emotional attachment to the business, along with a lack of qualified knowledge, seem to be the most salient obstacles. Practical implications Interfirm cooperation has become more vital for organizational success. However, empirical contributions regarding the barriers to engaging in cooperation, especially within a family business context, are limited. This study seeks to present theoretical barriers to engaging in interfirm cooperation and effectively link them within a family business context. Originality/value Being structured around the underlying challenges for interfirm cooperation, this paper contributes to advancing this specific research stream and presents practical contributions for managers for more effective implementation.

In the academic context, the interest in environmental corporate social responsibility (ECSR) has fueled a growing body of research and publications in recent years, fitting well within the discussion of grand challenges (Eisenhardt et al., 2016). These grand challenges have become fundamental concerns, with wide interest in management literature, and a worldwide framing in the United Nations 2030 Agenda and its 17 aspirational goals for sustainable development (Jamali et al., 2019(Jamali et al., , 2021. Bansal and Roth (2000) define ECSR as a set of initiatives (including changes to the firm's products, processes, and policies) aimed at mitigating a firm's impact on the natural environment to address the environmental challenges that the world is facing. One of the principal lines of research analyses the main factors influencing firm environmental commitment (Sharma & Sharma, 2011). Bansal and Roth (2000) argue that examining why some firms embrace ecologically responsible initiatives supports organizational theorists to recognize these factors, allowing managers and policy makers to determine the relative effectiveness of the different mechanisms and measures implemented to promote sustainability. PurposeRisk is part of corporate activity and a consequence of the businesses' demands, the market and the changes in companies and their surroundings. The way that risk is managed is different between family and non-family businesses. The paper aims to compare the different risk types experienced in the context of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic among family and non-family businesses and to analyze whether operational, legal, strategic and image risks influence financial risks.Design/methodology/approachThe nature of the study is quantitative and based on a questionnaire survey that analyses the perception of risks by 1,090 family businesses and 557 non-family businesses.FindingsThe results show the existence of statistically significant differences in the perception of financial and legal risks between family and non-family businesses, where the former being the businesses that give more importance to these risks. The perception of operational, legal, strategic and image risks have a positive influence on the perception of financial risk in family and non-family businesses.Originality/valueThe results obtained in the study are important because they allow an understanding about the differences in risk management between family and non-family businesses, which can lead to greater corporate sustainability and increased financial performance.
