The role of serum levels of vitamin D in children’s muscle strength: A systematic review

Abstract: This review aims to investigate the different levels of vitamin D and its role in muscle strength in healthy children and non-athletes. A search conducted in three databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Psycinfo) resulted in 655 articles, which were systematically analyzed and selected based on the following criteria: (a) original crosssectional studies and clinical trials; (b) healthy children aged 5-11 years; (c) no language restriction or year of publication; and (d) studies that assessed the possible relationship … Show more

“…According to the guideline by Pludowski et al ( 2018 ), supplementation of this vitamin is one of the items capable of improving the general health of human beings with the best cost-benefit ratio. It is important to emphasize that the objective of vit D supplementation is to reach and maintain the optimal concentrations of 25(OH)D. Therefore, several studies have used vit D supplementation as a tool for several purposes, such as athletic performance (Dahlquist et al, 2015 ; Neal et al, 2015 ; Owens et al, 2015 ; Chiang et al, 2017 ; Ksiazek et al, 2019 ), reduced risk of falls (Annweiler et al, 2010 ; Bikle, 2014 ; Halfon et al, 2015 ), effect on muscle strength/function (Carson et al, 2015 ; Ebid et al, 2017 ; Dzik and Kaczor, 2019 ; da Silva et al, 2021 ) and cognitive function (Chhetri et al, 2018 ; Hu et al, 2018 ; Mayne and Burne, 2019 ).…”

“…Then, Vit D deficiency is associated with an increased risk of developing a vast array of pathologies of the hearing system such as acute and chronic otitis [ 22 ], tympanosclerosis [ 33 ], otosclerosis [ 21 ], but also predisposes to accelerated deafness and presbycusis [ 27 , 34 ]. A strict relationship has been recently underpinned between stress, anxiety and depression-like behaviors [ 35 , 36 ], in that patients with low Vit D serum levels were found to be at enhanced risk of developing these psychophysiological disorders. In turn, an increased burden of stress, anxiety and depression could act by directly triggering newly onset tinnitus, or even by amplifying a pre-existing hearing disturbance [ 7 ].…”

“…Vitamin D de ciency is highly prevalent globally, and has been found in different populations, such as children, adolescents, adults, and older adults, irrespective of the race, ethnicity, or country [34]. Recently, vitamin D de ciency has been suggested to be associated with an increased risk of humor disorders, such as anxiety and depression, and is associated with neuropsychophysiological implications in general [34]. Therefore, it has been the subject of investigation.…”
