Proposal for a New Histological Scoring System for Cartilage Repair

Abstract: OBJECTIVE:This study aimed to develop a new histological scoring system for use in a partial-thickness cartilage repair animal model. Although previous papers have investigated the regeneration of articular cartilage, the good results achieved in small animals have not been replicated in large animal models or humans, possibly because of the frequent use of models with perforation of the subchondral bone plates. Partial-thickness lesions spare the subchondral bone, and this pattern is the most frequent in huma… Show more

“…In past studies, researchers have gradually found that, although tissue scaffolds made by general manufacturing techniques can alter the extracellular environment, the changes are more uniform and largely uncontrollable (Teimouri et al, 2015;Zhang et al, 2017;Ponce et al, 2018;Li et al, 2019). However, the complex environment in normal tissues is significantly different.…”

“…The matrix in adjacent islands stained in blue and was considered newly formed cartilage as the elastic cartilage has the ability to regenerate from the perichondrium; the bluish stain indicates newly formed collagen. 8,22 The perichondrium is a structure that surrounds the cartilage and is composed of an external, vascularized layer of loose connective tissue, surrounding a fibrous zone and a subchondral zone that fuses with the cartilage matrix. This structure can regenerate and form cartilage tissue; however, it is uncertain which cell is responsible for this differentiation.…”
