Videofluoroscopic analysis of different volumes of liquid bolus swallowing in healthy individuals: comparison between height and sex

Abstract: OBJECTIVE:The volume of swallowed bolus affects the pharyngeal transit duration. The sex and corporal height of individuals may likely influence this effect. The aim of this investigation was to determine the influence of sex and corporal height on the pharyngeal transit modification produced by the swallowed bolus volume.METHODS:Forty healthy volunteers, 20 men and 20 women, including tall (10 men and 10 women, corporal height: 1.71--2.07m) and short (10 men and 10 women, corporal height: 1.52--1.70m) persons… Show more

“…Thin liquids were more easily cleared than thicker consistencies, which is frequently noted with patients suffering from osteophytes or other spinal deformities. There is much evidence documented about the impact of bolus volume and viscosity on swallow and muscle activation [28][29][30][31][32]. The patient needed to swallow six or more times to clear 80% of the pharyngeal residue.…”

“…Videofluoroscopic assessment of swallowing was performed on 40 healthy individuals, 20 men and 20 women aged 20 to 50 years. Details about the age, height, weight and body mass index of the volunteers were previously published [25]. Subjects were divided into “tall” and “short” groups, based on the mean height of the Brazilian population, i.e., 172 cm for men and 161 cm for women (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, 2009).…”
