Correlation Between the Intima-Media Thickness of the Proximal and Distal Common Carotids

Abstract: BackgroundIncreased IMT (intima-media thickness) in carotids is used as an early atherosclerosis marker and to evaluate the risk of cardiovascular problems. Ultrasound is used in the evaluation because it is accessible and low cost. Measurements for different carotid regions are described. ObjectiveTo compare the proximal and distal region IMTs for the bilateral common carotid and guide its use in clinical practice. MethodsThe IMT was measured in the proximal and distal common carotid arteries of 798 individua… Show more

“…[34][35][36] In this study, we used VCAM-1 not as a marker for targeted plaque imaging, but as an inflammation marker in the context of endothelial regeneration after intravascular procedures. The detection of delayed reendothelialization and prolonged endothelial inflammation induced by diet or drug-eluting stents is an acute issue in clinical diagnostics.…”

“…For each image, measurements were performed during one cardiac cycle, which was divided into ten equal sections. All IMT measurements were done according to Mannheim Carotid Intima-Media Thickness Consensus (7,32).…”

“…Early cardiovascular damage may be evaluated with the ultrasound measurement of the carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) (7), which describes structural changes in vessel and arterial wall. Furthermore, the evaluation of arterial elasticity is highly correlated with pathologic changes in the common carotid artery and is accepted as an important predictor for CVD, considering that it is an early step in the process of atherosclerosis (8).…”

“…Thus the perimenopausal window is a critical time for increased CVD risk [ 8 ]. A valid procedure to evaluate early cardiovascular damage is the ultrasound measurement of the carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) [ 9 ].…”
