Variants of papillary thyroid carcinoma: association with histopathological prognostic factors

Abstract: A small percentage of papillary carcinoma cases is represented by variants recognized by their greater potential for aggression. There are associations between these variants and several other histopathological factors already recognized for their prognostic value, which may, by themselves, influence the outcome of these cases.

“…To date, published data about the importance of LVI for outcomes among patients with PTC have been limited to small, retrospective, single institution studies (Kim et al 2006, Girardi et al 2013. This is the first study to examine the association between LVI and mortality for PTC in a nationwide database and to demonstrate that the presence of tumor LVI is associated with compromised patient survival.…”

“…Most studies to date assessing LVI have focused on disease recurrence (Kim et al 2006, Girardi et al 2013. In an analysis of 517 patients with PTC undergoing thyroidectomy at a single institution over 11 years, Girardi and coworkers reported LVI as an important risk factor for disease recurrence, as well as cervical lymph node metastasis (Girardi et al 2013).…”

“…Pathological subtype is another factor affecting prognosis of papillary thyroid cancer. Girardi et al (8) evaluated 517 patients with papillary thyroid cancer in their study, in which papillary microcarcinoma, classical type and follicular subtype accounted for 82.9% of the patients. These three subtypes accounted for 92.7% of the patients in the present study; however, different from this study, follicular subtype was more prevalent than the classical subtype (7).…”
