Biological differences and unilateral cross-protection between biotypes of Cowpea aphid-borne mosaic virus

Abstract: -P a s s i on f r u i t ( Passiflora edulis) and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) are two agricultural crops of considerable economic importance in Northeastern Brazil. Fruit woodiness caused by isolates of Cowpea aphid-borne mosaic virus biotype P (CABMV-P) is the most important virus disease that occurs on passion fruit in Brazil and the biotype cowpea (CABMV-C) is responsible for the most common and important virus disease of cowpea in Northeastern Brazil. The objective of the present research was to determine th… Show more

“…Both viruses have a wide range of host plants and can infect cultivated and non-cultivated plants of diverse plant families. CABMV can infect plants of the families Passifloraceae, Fabaceae, Cucurbitaceae, Solanaceae, Chenopodiaceae, Amaranthaceae, and Poaceae [ 50 , 51 , 52 , 53 ]. CABYV has a wide range of Cucurbitacea plants as hosts and can infect several other plant families, such as Brassicaceae, Asteraceae, Malvaceae, Fabaceae, Amaranthaceae, Chenopodiaceae, Papaveraceae, Lamiaceae, Portulacaceae, Solanaceae, and Passifloraceae [ 16 , 17 , 20 , 27 , 32 , 54 , 55 , 56 , 57 , 58 ].…”

“…According to Maia et al. (2017), plants belonging to the family Fabaceae , such as Canavalia ensiformis , Macroptilium lathyroides and Vigna unguiculata , are systemically infected by the strains CABMV‐CBv and CABMV‐CFort obtained from cowpea, which manifests in the form of severe symptoms, whereas CABMV‐PSevere and CABMV‐PMild obtained from passion fruit do not infect cowpea.…”
