The evaluation of the prevalence of stress and its phases in acute myocardial infarction in patients active in the labour market.

Abstract: IntroductionAcute myocardial infarction is a social health problem of epidemiological relevance, with high levels of morbidity and mortality. Stress is one of the modifiable risk factors that triggers acute myocardial infarction. Stress is a result of a set of physiological reactions, which when exaggerated in intensity or duration can lead to imbalances in one's organism, resulting in vulnerability to diseases.ObjectiveTo identify the presence of stress and its phases in hospitalized and active labor market p… Show more

“…Hans Selye identified a three-stage common physiological response to stress—physical or psychological—coining the term “general adaptation syndrome” (GAS): alarm, resistance, and exhaustion 18. Lipp (in Lucinda et al) identified an additional stage of semi-exhaustion 19. In the alarm stage, stress launches the secretion of adrenaline, accompanied by psychological arousal.…”

“…The cardiovascular system is prone to being affected by stress caused by many factors experienced in modern life. Stress elicits changes in sympathetic-parasympathetic balance (Brotman et al 2007) which might negatively affect the cardiovascular system acutely by precipitating myocardial infarction (Lucinda et al 2015), left ventricular dysfunctions (Barclay and Vega 2005;Ramaraj 2007) and arrhythmias (Ziegelstein 2007). Stress activates the sympathetic function of the autonomic nervous system causing an increase in blood pressure (Trapp et al 2014), heart rate (Ayada et al 2015) and cardiac output (Von Baeyer et al 2005), and release of stress hormones.…”
