Psychometric properties of APGAR-family scale in a multiethnic sample of Chilean older people Background: The APGAR-family scale is used for the assessment of family functioning in primary health care. Aim: To examine the psychometric properties of the family functioning scale APGAR-family, in a multi-ethnic sample of older Chilean adults. Material and Methods: The scale was applied to 800 participants aged more than 60 years, residing in rural areas of the regions of Arica and Parinacota and La Araucanía. Results: The Cronbach's alpha obtained was 0,992 for the scale composed of five items. The confirmatory factor analysis determined a unifactorial model, whose goodness of fit indices were satisfactory. Namely, weighted least square mean and variance adjusted-χ 2 was 20.097 (p < 0.01), comparative fit index was 0.997, Tucker-Lewis index was 0.995 and Root Mean Square Error of Approximation was 0.079 (90% confidence intervals 0.049-0.091). Conclusions: The APGAR-family is a reliable and appropriate instrument to be applied in older people in Chile, specifically in elderly people residing in rural areas who belong to the Aymara and Mapuche indigenous communities.

Objective: The aim of the presentstudy was to investigate the associations between the satisfaction of family caregivers and family relations; sociodemographic variables; the type and direction, sufficiency and burden of family support, and the number of social partners involved. Method: A total of 148 caregivers of elderly relatives who were physically and cognitively dependent were recruited from medical clinics and home care services in cities in the state of São Paulo and invited to respond to a questionnaire about family support, and to a scale of satisfaction with family relationships with reference to adaptation, partnership, growth, affection and resolutive capacity. The chi-squared and Fisher's exact tests were used to compare frequencies for the scores of the two satisfaction levels (low and intermediate, and high). To analyze the relationship between high levels of satisfaction and other variables, univariate and hierarchical logistic regression analysis was used. Results: High levels of satisfaction were related to the reciprocity and suffiency of received emotional support, and absence of burden associated to giving support. The adequacy of emotional support was most strongly associated with high levels of satisfaction with family relationships. Conclusion: For the satisfaction of caregivers of elderly persons with family functioning, quality of support is better than quantity, reciprocity is more important than unidirectionality and emotional is the most important type of support.

The objective of this study was to describe the conceptual model and construction of the Vitor Quality of Life Scale for the Elderly (VITOR QLSE). The following approaches were employed to devise and incorporate new items and dimensions into the scale: qualitative study, literature review, focus group and pre-test performed in 30 older adults. The VITOR QLSE was constructed based on the structure of the Quality of Life Index (QLI) and on a specifi c methodological structure providing dimensions refl ecting the quality of life of older adults. The present instrument may serve as a valuable resource in healthcare practice and research that meets the needs of the scientifi c community, especially in light of the current dearth of instruments in this area.
