SUMMARY The authors conducted a single-center retrospective study during the last 6.5 years. The study aimed to describe demographic data of burn patients in the Croatian Burn Center and investigate factors affecting mortality for the first time after the Center was established. The study included 109 severely burned patients with a total body surface area (TBSA) burned ≥20%, admitted to the burn intensive care unit. The relationship between the fatal outcome and age, sex, comorbidity, mechanism of injury, TBSA burned, and inhalation injury was investigated. The mean patient age was 54.50±20.21 years and the mean TBSA burned was 42.48±18.64%, with the mortality rate of 50%. The results demonstrated that patients with 2 or more comorbidities compared with those with no comorbidities had a higher chance of lethal outcome (p<0.0001). With an increase of TBSA by 1%, the odds of lethal outcome are expected to increase by 7% (p<0.0001). Other variables included in the analysis did not show statistical significance. TBSA percentage is a well-known predictor of mortality and numerous studies indicate an association between comorbidities and mortality but there are conflicting results about other demographic factors and injury characteristics.

BACKGROUND Although burn-related injuries are serious and can cause significant morbidity and mortality, this can be alleviated through the appropriate practice of first aid for burns. We aimed to explore the practice of first aid and measure the level of knowledge of burns and burn-related nutrition in Saudi Arabia. Methods Data were collected using an online questionnaire, distributed among the general Saudi population between Jul and Sep 2020. It included socioeconomic and biographical data, and knowledge and practice of first aid for burns and burn-related nutrition. Data were analyzed using SPSS. Results Overall, 2437 people were enrolled in this study, of which 59.5% were female. More than half (51.9%) the subjects were between 19 and 25 yr of age. Younger age group (≤25 yr) showed a significantly better practices score (t=4.844; P <0.001). Females exhibited a significantly better knowledge score than males ( t =-3.131; P =0.021). Unemployed respondents were significantly more associated with a lower knowledge score ( t =4.796; P =0.007) and a lower practices score ( t =18.375; P <0.001) while those with a history of exposure to burn injury had a lower knowledge score ( t =-4.816; P <0.001) and a lower practices score ( t =-3.237; P =0.001). Conclusion There is a lack of knowledge and practice of burn’s first aid and burn-related nutrition. Thus, courses and training in first aid for burns and awareness campaigns are essential in order to improve the knowledge of the general Saudi population.

Background: Assessment of length of stay and mortality in patients with burn injuries is essential to support clinicians in making clinical decisions. In Indonesia, there are several scoring systems used by hospital centers to assess the mortality of burn patients, such as the Belgian Outcome of Burn Injury (BOBI) and the Abbreviated Burn Severity Index (ABSI). However, different results were obtained in studies that examined the comparison of the results of the scoring system. Method: The type of research used in this research is unpaired comparative analysis research using a cross-sectional design. The data to be used is secondary data taken from medical records. Results: Respondents with death status were found in the serious, severe, and maximum ABSI categories, p=0.001 (p<0.05) and the BOBI 50% category as many as three people and 85% as many as one person, p=0.0001 (0<0.05). Length of stay based on the ABSI score for the length of stay was 23 days with an ABSI score of 12-13 (maximum), and based on the BOBI Score, the majority was 28 days with a BOBI score of 8 (85%). ABSI in this study had a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 86.4%, while the use of BOBI in this study had a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 88.1%. Discussion: The BOBI scoring system is more accurate than the ABSI. This difference may occur due to differences in demographics and quality of service in each region. Therefore, the analysis of the validity of the scoring model before the research is carried out in a new population is considered crucial to be carried out.
