Emissions of Criteria and Non-Criteria Pollutants by a Flex-Fuel Motorcycle

Abstract: While criteria pollutants have established emission limits for motorcycles in Brazil, aldehydes limits have not been established and conclusive studies have not been found in the existing literature, despite the growing number of motorcycles using flex fuel in Brazil. This work presents results for the emissions of criteria pollutants, such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides, acetaldehyde and formaldehyde. The motorcycle was tested with 22, 61, and 100% of ethanol in gasoline blends. Fourier … Show more

“…The contents of each cartridge were transferred to a 2-mL vial and added to 1000 μL of dichloromethane at − 20 °C. The flasks were capped with septum caps, placed in an ultrasonic bath for 20 min, and then allowed to rest for 1 h (Correa et al, 2012 ; Corrêa and Arbilla, 2007 , 2006 ; Daemme, 2016a ; Daemme, 2016b ; Garcia et al, 2013 ; Macedo et al, 2017 ; Martins et al, 2016 , 2007 ).…”

“…The temperatures of the ion trap, manifold, and transfer line were 150 °C, 40 °C, and 180 °C, respectively. The MS detector monitored ions from 72 to 79, 89 to 93, 101 to 107, and 119 to 121 (m/z) (Correa et al, 2012 ; Corrêa and Arbilla, 2007 , 2006 ; Daemme, 2016a ; Daemme, 2016b ; Garcia et al, 2013 ; Macedo et al, 2017 ; Martins et al, 2016 , 2007 ). The calibration was performed with a standard BTEX solution (Supelco EPA TO-1 Mix 1A) by external standardisation with concentrations of 0.10, 0.20, 0.50, 1.00, 2.00, and 4.00 ng mL −1 , as an acceptance criterion of the analytical curve determination coefficients higher than 0.99.…”

“…The unburned ethanol in the engine exhaust is the primary alcohol emission in FFV. Under the dynamic test conditions, unburned ethanol increases with increasing the share of ethanol in FFV as a result of higher LHV of ethanol 147 . In most studies, saturated hydrocarbon emissions are increased with ethanol blends in FFV because of the inefficient oxidation process in the catalyst under low temperature operating conditions 148,149 .…”
