“…Red grape seed extract, which contains antioxidant oligomeric proanthocyanidins, has been revealed to increase serum paraoxonase (PON) activity. Paraoxonase is an enzyme that protects against lipid oxidation in patients with mild to moderate hyperlipidemia [146] and in hemodialysis patients [147]. The red wine extract of onion, in particular, suppressed both the total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels, and also modulated inflammatory markers, such as factor VII [148].…”

“…In fact, increased uptake of food-based antioxidants can be a promising alternative measure to reduce oxidative cell damage and stress response (Weisel et al, 2006). In HD patients, few studies (Castilla et al, 2006(Castilla et al, , 2008Sportmann et al, 2008;Alipour et al, 2012;Janiques et al, 2014) have evaluated the effects of polyphenolic-rich fruit juices on antioxidant capacity, and oxidative stress. No previous studies have been carried out to determine its effect on the levels of genetic damage in such patients.…”

“…44 In this study, the patients receiving grape powder displayed an increase in GSH-Px activity and did not exhibit increased C-reactive protein levels, as seen in placebo group, suggesting that grape powder could play a crucial role as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent in non-diabetic HD patients. 44 …”
