The natural fiber market has been growing extraordinarily. Hereupon the current work presents the natural fiber of the periquiteira tree Cochlospermum orinocense of the Amazon forest. The chemical composition, physical aspects, morphology, thermal and mechanical properties of this fiber will be discussed. The thermal stability of the fiber samples was about 200 °C. The decomposition of cellulose and hemicelluloses in the fibers occurred at 300 ºC and above, while the degradation of the fibers happened above 400 °C. This fiber had good specific strength and good binding properties due to their low weight and presence of high cellulose (60.15wt.%), low lignin (12.03wt.%). More pronounced mass loss indicated the degradation of the amorphous regions of the cellulose, and finally reached a peak of approximately 390 °C.

The use of lignocellulosic fibers and their constituents has aroused interest in their application as a raw material in the production of polymers, representing an opportunity to add economic value to industrial waste and to sustainable technological development. This work carried out the study of the banana fiber in natural form and with alkaline treatment, through characterization of the thermal and chemical properties, in order to evaluate the structures and the best ways of using fiber as reinforcement in polymeric materials. Results found showed variations of percentages of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, the main components of banana fiber, when compared to in natural fiber with treated fiber. These effects impacted the physical characteristics of the fiber surface with increasing roughness, which favors the matrix anchoring process. It was also observed for the thermal behavior of the fiber in the matter of treated fiber, with the most severe degradation in the fiber in natural.

Background: During de-pulping of açai (Euterpe oleracea) for juice production in the Amazonia, large amounts of fibrous waste are daily discarded, a promising substrate for production of high-value cellulose nanofibrils. Therefore, this study sought to evaluate the modifications of açai surface fibers submitted to chemical pretreatment steps and compare the quality of nanostructured films produced with different cycles of mechanical nanofibrillation. Results:A 2-hour pretreatment (at 5% of NaOH) followed by two NaOH/H 2 O 2 bleaching steps resulted in fibers with increased length and reduced diameter compared to raw fibers while preserving fiber integrity and cellulose I structure. The increase of fibers' grinding cycles from 3 (minimum to gel point) to 21 (maximum suspension thickness) resulted in nanofibril films with higher crystallinity properties, uniform thickness, compacted morphology, and smoother surface. Nanofibril films formed after different numbers of passages exhibited similar mechanical strength, but distinct barrier properties. Conclusion:Açaí waste films produced with fibers submitted to 3 grinding cycles can be recommended for packaging applications that demand easily dissolving, such as instantaneous food. Oppositely, açaí fibers subjected to 21 cycles in grinder provide films suitable for water-resistant packaging, ideal for secondary coatings of papers and paperboards.
