World aquaculture has been growing sharply in recent decades and Brazilian production of fish in cages has grown considerably since the end of the 1990s. This increase is related to the development of federal government regulations and the large number of medium and large hydroelectric reservoirs. The main areas of fish production in cages in Brazil are currently located in the Northeast and Southeast regions and along the Southeast/South border. Tilapia production in cages in Brazil, as well as other species produced in cages in other regions of the world, has economic advantages for the producer. On the other hand, limnologically, tilapia production in cages causes enormous damage, as it promotes the process of artificial eutrophication and, possibly, introduces this exotic species. One way of reducing artificial eutrophication is the use of Integrated Multi-trophic Aquaculture (IMTA); however, its use in fish cages installed in Brazilian reservoirs is not possible yet. Therefore, our view is that government agencies restrict the production of fish in cages to the utmost.

Studies on the sustainability of aquaculture have been carried out around the world. The input of organic matter in the sediment and the influence of current velocity on the deposition of particles produced by fish in captivity can be used to assess the distribution of benthic assemblages below marine farms. Sediment and benthic organisms were collected in April, September and December 2019 and in August and October 2020 in the fish farming area and in two control areas in the Bananal cove in Ilha Grande Bay. The measurement of the speed of local currents was carried out below the net-tank, in periods of 24 days in of April and July 2019. The heterogeneity of the biological data was evident between the collection points, indicating that several factors can influence the distribution of benthic macrofauna. There was no correlation between the values of organic matter and species richness and for organic matter and species diversity. The values of the Marine Biotic Index (AMBI) for the three collection stations were smaller than 1 (one), that is, there was a predominance of species sensitive to pollution and organic enrichment. The marine farm and the control areas were considered an unpolluted environment. The results also indicated that the local currents presented insufficient intensities to disperse the organic matter produced in the marine farm to the control areas.

Extreme drought events and the sustainability of fish farming in net cages in reservoirs of the semi-arid northeastern region in Brazil

Reservoirs play important roles in local socioeconomic development and are particularly relevant in developing countries. The rearing of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in cages is one of the fastest growing activities carried out in reservoirs since it is a strategy to sustain the growing demand for food fish. Most reservoirs are in eutrophic or hypereutrophic conditions in the semi-arid northeast region of Brazil and thus, the expansion of aquaculture endangers the ecological functions of the reservoirs by increasing the eutrophication potential. On the other hand, aquaculture contributes to economic development by generating jobs and income for the population and being an important alternative in the production sector for riverine populations. In this context, we present in this article our opinion about the sustainability of fish farming activities in net cages in reservoirs of the Brazilian semiarid, especially when subjected to extreme drought events.
